When Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the man suspected of setting off the Boston Marathon bombs, was finally captured last night after an intense day-long manhunt, it was MBTA Transit Police officers who slapped the cuffs on the man who is accused of nearly killing one of their own.
MBTA Transit Police officer Richard Donohue, 33, was shot during the firefight early yesterday in Watertown that killed Tsarnaev’s older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
Eighteen hours later, and just a couple blocks away, members of the Transit Police SWAT team were the ones who placed the handcuffs on Tsarnaev, MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo told the Herald today.
“They were absolutely determined to apprehend the terrorist who tried to kill one of their own,” said Pesaturo.
Donohue underwent emergency surgery at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge around 1 a.m. yesterday, and was listed in stable but critical condition.
