Stay Safe in the Heat: Know the Signs of Heat Stress

June 29, 2026

As temperatures rise, it’s important for transit workers to recognize the signs of heat-related illness and take steps to stay safe on the job. Heat stress can develop quickly and, if left untreated, can become a life-threatening emergency.

Know the warning signs:

  • Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Symptoms may include hot, dry skin, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately if you or a coworker experiences these symptoms.
  • Heat exhaustion can cause heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, and cool, damp skin.
  • Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms caused by the loss of salt and fluids.
  • Heat rash can develop when sweat becomes trapped under the skin.

Protect yourself on the job:

  • Drink water frequently, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Take scheduled rest and water breaks.
  • Whenever possible, work in cooler or shaded areas.
  • Watch for signs of heat stress in yourself and your coworkers.
  • If someone appears faint, dizzy, or confused, get them to a cooler area immediately and seek medical attention.

A safe workplace is every worker’s right. Employers should provide clean drinking water, adequate rest breaks, proper ventilation where possible, and prompt medical response when heat-related illness occurs.

As the summer continues, stay alert, stay hydrated, and look out for one another. Your health and safety come first.
