Statement from Boston Carmen’s Union
June 5, 2020
“The Boston Carmen’s Union stands in solidarity with peaceful protesters across the Commonwealth and across the country. As MBTA employees, we are committed to always getting riders where they need to go. Now more than ever, it is important that we continue to serve the city, our passengers, and protesters. Our members have often been called upon to support and transport law enforcement for special events of all kinds in Boston. That work has long been part of our mission to provide safe and reliable transportation. The Union had agreed with MBTA management that we would continue to provide transportation to officers during the ongoing protests but the MBTA’s Fiscal and Management Control Board made the decision that our role should end.
Many of us come from communities that have historically been most affected by the issues being protested right now. We support law enforcement, but our operators have not and will not transport those who are arrested at these protests. In several cities around the country our brothers and sisters in the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) have done the same and we are proud to stand with them. We will not stop working to ensure that we are carrying out our mission to provide safe and reliable transportation to our riders who need it.
We condemn anyone who uses these protests to harm people or property, which is why we have deep concerns about stations being closed, thus preventing peaceful protestors from clearing the area.”
In solidarity,
Executive Board
Boston Carmen’s Union, Local 589
