“Remembering Rosa”
February 13, 2013
Today, the Boston Carmen’s Union, Local 589, helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ birthday by honoring 8 women from our across our Commonwealth who exemplify the courage and community spirit of Rosa Parks.
Rosa Parks once said, “I would like to be known as a person who is concerned about freedom and equality and justice and prosperity for all people.” By refusing to give up her seat on a bus she was part of one of the most historic equal rights campaign in U.S. history, the Montgomery bus boycott. She understood fighting for transit justice is fighting for social justice.
One of the women honored was Mary Young, a resident of Randolph, who has been a faithful and exceptionally committed employee of the MBTA since 1988. Mary works as an Operator at the Cabot garages and is also happily known as the unofficial MBTA event Planner. Whenever the Cabot and neighboring garages want to plan an event, they call on Mary. For more than 10 years, she has been spearheading events for her community and fellow colleagues, including an annual Black History event.
Mary was born in Holy Hill South Carolina and is proud mother of two and grandmother of four. She is a faithful member of the Grant AME Church in Boston and is President of the Brown Sugar Social Club. She has been married to Mr. Bobby Young for 28 years and enjoys deep sea fishing trips, socializing with friend, worshiping God and life in General.
