Remembering Brother Andrew Wong
April 5, 2020
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
We are sad to announce the death of our union brother Andrew “Andy” Wong who passed away on Tuesday after contracting COVID-19. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Andy’s family, friends, and fellow workers.
Andy was hired by the MBTA on May 4, 1998, and went on to a 22-year career. He started as an operator at the Bartlett/Arborway Garage and later, at the time of his passing, an inspector at Southampton Garage. Simply put, Andy loved his job. Ask anyone who knew him and they would tell you he was an incredible guy who was an absolute asset to the MBTA. Dedicated, hardworking, dependable, honest, and down-to-earth, Andy was the kind of guy who made everybody look and feel good.
As we all know, the job of a transit worker is never easy. Sometimes we find ourselves on the receiving end of criticism from the press, politicians, and the public. But, critics and their criticism aside, Andy always seemed to rise above it with an infectious smile and a heightened level of positivity that brought up everyone around him. He also had a wonderful sense of humor, was quick with a joke, and was a bit of a jokester. Above everything, he really cared about his union brothers and sisters and was always there — whether with a joke, smile, question or a hug — to pick others up.
This is a huge loss for our union family and Andy will never be forgotten. We again extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Andy’s family, friends and fellow workers. If there is a bus terminal up in heaven, we know God has one less thing to worry about now that he has Andy by his side.
During this time of social distancing, we invite those who knew and loved Andy to share their memories of him in the comments below. Also, please know that during these incredibly trying times, your Union continues to stand up for you while doing everything in our power to ensure the safety and protection of all our members.
In Solidarity,
Your Executive Board
