Rallies to Protect OUR Work and Protest Draconian Service Cuts

November 11, 2020

As you have probably heard on TV or read in the news, starting next spring and summer, the MBTA has plans to eliminate commuter rail service on weekends and after 9 p.m. on weeknights, cease running all ferries, scrap 25 bus routes, and halt subways and buses at midnight, cut streetcar service through Mission Hill, and scale back more transit options.

In response, President Jim Evers said, “It is the same old song of MBTA officials pushing austerity, rather than daring to ask the wealthy to pay their fair share, despite the strong public support for new revenues that will ensure high quality, affordable, safe public transportation.” He also said the union will push for a moratorium on any additional cuts that would affect essential workers in jobs critical to the state’s fight against the coronavirus.

Although we are unsure exactly how these cuts will be rolled out, the fight for our jobs, our riders, and our communities starts today. That said, all Local 589 members, who are not working, and retirees are strongly encouraged to join us at the following rallies to protect our work and protest these draconian service cuts.

  • Today (11/11) @ 2 PM EST at the Heath Street Green Line Stop, join the Mission Hill Community, riders, elected officials, union members to protest these MBTA’s service cuts.
  • Next Thursday (11/19) @ 10 AM EST at 135 Stuart St, in front of the State Transportation Building, hear from riders and workers who would be affected by the deep cuts. Click here to learn more.

Time to fight folks. Get up and get motivated. We are in it together and when we fight, we win.

In solidarity,

Executive Board
Boston Carmen’s Union, Local 589
