Private MBTA Contractors Humilitate Blind Rider

August 11, 2017

Today, CBS Boston and the Boston Herald reported that two employees for a contractor that provides customer service at MBTA stations were fired after they got into a confrontation yesterday with a blind man.

According to reports, the man was “physically obstructed from entering the platform” when he tried to follow other riders through the fare gates. That led to what officials called a “physical confrontation,” during which the man dropped his walking stick. An ambassador then picked it up and tossed it away from him.

Block by Block is the private company hired by the MBTA to provide customer service “ambassadors” in its stations. They were awarded a $4.1 million annual contract to begin staffing its stations with customer service agents, replacing jobs once held by unionized MBTA staff.

“We have been talking for over a year about all the reasons privatization is wrong for the MBTA and our riders,” said the Boston Carmen’s Union. “Sadly, this is another example of privatization gone wrong.”

Below is the raw video from the incident, which was made available on CBS Boston’s reporting of the incident.
