Patrick Praises 589 Members
February 14, 2013
Today, Gov. Patrick, the Secretary of Transportation, and the MBTA’s General Manager came to the Cabot Facility in South Boston to thank all our members for their professionalism during the winter storm. Service was down from Friday afternoon until Sunday. During that time, crews spent time clearing the tracks and shoveling out stations. Patrick said it was the workers who were out in the elements who got the system back up and running.
During the visit, the Governor talked about how the blizzard exposed weaknesses in the MBTA’s electrical system. “There’s some glamorous things that government has to do and do well. And when it comes to the T for example, the electrical system has been a challenge.” Patrick said that in rolling out his transportation plan, “one of the things we talked about was modernizing the electrical system, so when there’s a short at Park Street it doesn’t shut the system down all the way up to Alewife.”
“We’re going to do everything we can so that they [the MBTA] have the resources not just to run the system we have today, but to run a 21st century system,” Patrick said. “That’s what the budget conversation and debate is about. Until then, we’re going to support their good work because they support all the rest of us.”
