A bus driver for the MBTA is being hailed this week for his quick thinking and compassion, after he pulled over on a busy road during a recent shift to help a 10-year-old girl who had been reported missing earlier that day.

Michael Clooney, who has been working for the MBTA for nearly a decade, said he had just wrapped up a route in Lynn and was headed in an out-of-service bus to Wonderland Station around 6 p.m. Tuesday when he noticed someone walking along a portion of North Shore Road that doesn’t have sidewalks.

Immediately, he thought, “This road is dangerous. It’s North Shore Road. It’s a little highway,” Clooney, 34, told the Globe in a telephone interview. “Right away it got my attention because no one really walks on that road.”
