A Somerville man has been ordered to stay away from an MBTA bus driver he allegedly assaulted because of her race in July, under a civil rights injunction obtained by the office of Attorney General Martha Coakley, her office announced today.

Coakley said in a statement that a Suffolk Superior Court judge barred John Twohig on Wednesday from coming within 100 yards of his alleged victim. His age was not listed in the media release.

Prosecutors alleged that Twohig screamed profanities and racial slurs at the female driver and lunged at her while her bus idled at the , Coakley said.

Her office has obtained 42 civil rights injunctions on behalf of victims of hate crimes since 2007, according to the statement.

“We allege that the defendant engaged the victim in a racially motivated verbal assault that directly interfered with the victim’s civil rights and ability to safely perform her job duties,” Coakley said in the statement. “No one should fear for their safety based on their race in the Commonwealth and our office will continue to uphold the law and protect peoples’ rights.”
