Local 589 Supports “Fill-A-Bus” Toy Drive for Boston Area Kids
December 17, 2011
The Boston Carmen’s Union Local 589 donated toys to the MBTA’s “Fill-A-Bus” 11th Annual Toy Drive that concluded on December 16th. The toy collection effort benefits disadvantaged children through donations to three Boston area community programs. The “Fill-A-Bus campaign has grown over the years and Local 589 has been a regular supporter of the program.
“The Boston Carmen’s Union recognizes that many of the families who rely on public transit struggle financially, especially in the current economy,” explains President/Business Agent John Lee. “The entire Union membership gets behind this important program to guarantee that children have a Merry Christmas regardless of their families situation. It’s just one of the examples of our Union’s involvement in the community at large”.
Members of Local 589′s Executive Board joined Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey and Interim MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davies at the Cabot Bus Yard as representatives from the three community groups gathered donated toys from an overflowing T Bus.
Our Union would also like to recognize Local 589 member Hazel Gaylor-Burt who had the responsibility to operate the “Fill-A-Bus” and expertly navigated Boston streets to deliver the busload of presents to Cabot. Well done Sister Gaylor-Burt.
