Local 589 Stands With Striking NYC School Bus Drivers

January 22, 2013

The members of ATU Local 589 and the Executive Board stand with our union brothers and sisters in New York (ATU Local 1181) who are braving the wintry weather to get Mayor Michael Bloomberg and School Chancellor Walcott to negotiate with them so they can put an end to the strike.

At the center of the dispute is the elimination of a bid provision for 1,100 bus routes for special needs students that ensures the most experienced, well-trained operators and matrons are on the job. The ATU has launched a TV and radio ad campaign highlighting the risks of using inexperienced drivers and telling Mayor Bloomberg kids come first. Watch this hard-hitting ad.
