Local 589 Stands with Mayor Wu—A Champion for Transit and Labor

October 30, 2025

This weekend, our union proudly stood with Boston Mayor Michelle Wu as she launched her bid for reelection.

This isn’t just another election year. At the federal level, over 1 million federal employees have had their collective bargaining rights stripped, 280,000 have been laid off, and institutions that protect us—like the NLRB, NIOSH, and OSHA—are being defunded and dismantled.

We’re fortunate to live in a city and state where elected leaders support labor and public transportation—but if we do not fight to keep them in office, they cannot fight for us. Now more than ever, we need allies who will stand up and fight for working people, and Mayor Wu is unafraid.

Long an active user of the MBTA—and still one today—she has been an unabashed champion for public transit as a public good. Her lived experience is why she fights for working families like ours who depend on public transportation. She has stood with Local 589 to protect transit jobs, boost ridership, and improve service.

That’s why we support her. And make no mistake: as a city councilor and now as mayor, she’s already been fighting for our rights and our livelihoods. Now it’s time we show her that the working men and women of Local 589 have her back.
