Local 589 Members Prevented Tragedy
March 16, 2023
Quick thinking and action can prevent tragedy. A brave team of Local 589 members, including two Green Line operators and four Reservoir carhouse repairers, recently showed how our union’s training and dedication saved a woman’s life.
When a young woman fell between two train cars, Green Line operators Ashley Torres and Francisco Lazarre immediately hit the emergency brakes. These operators’ heroic actions undoubtedly saved this woman’s life and prevented worse injuries.
When firefighters could not free the woman on their own, Local 589 came to the rescue again. Four repairers from the Reservoir carhouse—Andrew Pizzano, Phong Nguyen, Claude Placide, and Jason Lussier—were called to the scene and used their hydraulic jacking equipment to lift the train off the woman successfully.
This is why we take training so seriously at Local 589—being prepared for any situation can be the difference between life and death. Our work isn’t easy, but we ensure that MBTA workers know how to spot and respond to a problem.
Please join Local 589 in thanking Ashley, Francisco, Andrew, Phong, Claude, and Jason for their life-saving actions!
