Dear brothers and sisters,

Mayoral candidates Marty Walsh and Bill Carpenter topped a list of Boston Carmen’s Union Local 589 endorsed candidates who were winners last night.

Marty Walsh, a Laborers Union officer and State Representative, won the Boston Mayor’s race 52% to 48% with strong support from Local 589 and Union members throughout the city. Challenger Bill Carpenter defeated the incumbent Brockton Mayor by 55 votes in one of the closest elections of the night. Local 589 mailed and called members in both cities as part of a “get-out-the-vote” effort that proved to be successful. Medford Mayor Mike McGlynn, Local 589’s endorsed candidate, was re-elected after a strong challenge in that city.

“The Boston Carmen’s Union is active in municipal elections for a number of reason,” explained President John Lee. “In Boston, State Representative Marty Walsh has been a leader in restoring collective bargaining rights over health care for MBTA workers and a leader for increased transit funding that stopped layoffs at the MBTA. Mayors across Eastern Massachusetts have also played important roles in opposing privatization of bus and other MBTA services.”
