How should the MBTA pay its bills?

January 17, 2012

MBTA logoThe MBTA, facing a $161 million budget deficit, recently announced it would use a combination of fare hikes and service cuts to deal with the problem. The transportation authority has presented two scenarios. One relies more on fare hikes, and the other relies more on service cuts. Depending on what the MBTA decides, Somerville will either lose a handful of bus routes or its residents will need to pay substantially more to ride the T.

The MBTA hasn’t made up its mind about what course of action to take. Some public transportation advocates have argued the T needs a different funding structure so it can afford to pay its bills. One idea batted around is the state should raise the gas tax and direct that revenue toward public transportation.
