Have Each Other’s Backs: Learn the Signs of Mental Health Struggles

November 18, 2021

Brothers and Sisters,

As frontline drivers and operators, we have some of the toughest jobs in the country. From working hours that impact our families and our health to the occasional negativity from those we serve, stress can add up. And not everyone knows how to ask for help when they need it.

It’s up to us as friends, coworkers, and loved ones to check in when we think someone might be going through a rough patch, and let them know that there are resources to help.

1 in 5 U.S. adults experiences mental health issues each year. Learn how to spot the signs of mental health or recovery issues in others and reach out to let them know they have support. This small step can make a world of difference for someone in need.

Here are just a few of the signs to look out for:

  • Tiredness, low energy, or trouble sleeping: Regular sleep is an important part of mental health. Check-in with your friends, coworkers, and family members if they seem tired, restless, or unable to sleep normally.
  • Withdrawal from friends or activities: When a loved one is going through something, they may avoid the people they care about or lose interest in things they used to love. This could be normal—or it might be a sign of a bigger problem— the only way to know for sure is to ask.
  • Unusual mood changes, including worrying, sadness, irritability, or anger: You know your friends and loved ones best. If someone seems off, they might need help.

We will also be holding a mental health training with Janet Gerhard of FHE HEALTH on Sunday, December 5, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Boston Teacher’s Union Hall.

Attendance is limited so please fill out the form below to RSVP for this training.

This is the first of Local 589’s Committee on Health & Wellness quarterly meetings to address issues such as violence in the workplace, sexual harassment, stress and anxiety, and other issues affecting our membership. Coffee, donuts and muffins will be provided.

If you have any questions, please call the union hall or a member of the executive board.
