Greater Boston Labor Council Recommends Endorsement of Nick Collins for State Senate
April 3, 2013
On Tuesday, April 2nd, the Greater Boston Central Labor Council voted by a two-thirds super-majority to recommend the endorsement of Nick Collins for State Senator in the special election on April 30th. Collins, a current State Representative, is running for the open 1st Suffolk District seat formerly held by Jack Hart.
After hearing presentations from all three candidates running in the Democratic Primary, the Greater Boston CLC Committee on Political Education (COPE) voted by a two-thirds majority to recommend Labor’s endorsement of Collins to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. (Each Boston CLC affiliated union has one vote in the COPE meeting). The Collins recommendation was then approved by a two-thirds majority of all the delegates attending the full membership meeting. The Mass AFL-CIO has the final endorsement authority for state offices and it’s Vice Presidents will vote on the Greater Boston CLC endorsement recommendation later this month.
Unions supporting NIck Collins pointed out his record of fighting for the middle class, his steadfast support for collective bargaining rights, his successful legislative effort to restore collective bargaining right over health insurance to workers on the MBTA, and his community involvement throughout the Dorchester – South Boston neighborhoods.
The Greater Boston Central Labor Council has 154 affiliated unions representing over 90,000 union families according to its website.
