Bill H.1877: Protecting Transit Workers from Assault

May 8, 2025

On May 7, the Massachusetts Joint Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing on Bill H.1877, sponsored by Rep. Joseph W. McGonagle, Jr. The bill aims to criminalize assault by bodily substances and extend legal protections to public transit workers, treating them like police officers and EMTs.

During the hearing, Local 589 Executive Board members shared compelling statistics, and several members testified about being punched, kicked, threatened, and assaulted while doing their jobs. These powerful testimonies highlight the need for stronger protections for our members. We encourage you to watch the hearing video.
