ATU supports Walmart workers’ Black Friday protests
November 21, 2012
ATU is standing with Walmart workers to support demonstrations at stores and warehouses on Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year, to protest the company’s union-busting tactics, discrimination, and poor treatment of workers.
Walmart workers are unable to support their families because of the company’s low wages, rising part-time work and erratic scheduling – all practices that Walmart is promoting in its stores. Many have to choose between paying their mortgage and putting food on the table for their families. Workers who show support for a union are being intimated and silenced by having their schedules cut and threatened with losing their job. “These workers are standing up for their rights on the job to fight the intimidation and bullying by the world’s largest and most influential retailers,” said ATU International President Larry Hanley. “This is a fight for the middle class against the corporate greed that has poisoned our society. We call on ATU members to join these brave Walmart workers on the pickets lines and join the fight for the dignity and respect of all working people.”
