Ask Your State Rep. to Cosponsor HD.2574
February 19, 2021
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Over the past few years, there has been an increase in assaults on Local 589 members, but no law in place to punish the perpetrators. Working with our lobbyist, Local 589’s Executive Board drafted legislation, HD.2574 (An Act relative to the offense of assault and battery upon a transit worker), to create a mandatory jail sentence for those who assault public transit workers in the performance of their duties.
Massachusetts State Rep. Joe McGonagle sponsored the legislation, but he needs our help to get other state representatives to co-sponsor it, which will improve the chances of it being passed into law. Please call your state legislator today to let them know you want them to co-sponsor HD.2574. If you don’t know who your state representative is, click on the following link to look them up: https://malegislature.gov/search/findmylegislator. Once you have looked them up, call their office and use the following short script:
Hi, my name is __(enter your name)__ and I am a constituent of State Rep. _(insert your rep’s name)_. I am calling to ask that you co-sponsor HD.2574 (An Act relative to the offense of assault and battery upon a transit worker). As an MBTA employee, we should not fear being assaulted at work. Can I count on your support? Thank you!
If you have any questions about this bill, please contact an executive board member.
In solidarity,
Executive Board
Boston Carmen’s Union, Local 589
